About Our Internship Program:
The Ophthalmology Specialty Internship Program at VEC is designed for veterinarians who have completed a one-year rotating internship and are eager to pursue advanced training in veterinary ophthalmology. This program provides a comprehensive foundation for individuals preparing to apply for a competitive residency in veterinary ophthalmology.
During the internship, participants will:
- Develop Diagnostic and Clinical Skills: Work closely with board-certified ophthalmologists to gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and managing a wide variety of ophthalmic conditions in small and large animals, as well as exotics and zoo animals.
- Gain Surgical Exposure: Participate in supervised surgical procedures to build fundamental skills and confidence in ophthalmic surgery, with a focus on techniques essential for residency success.
- Master Case Management: Take a lead role in managing diverse and complex ophthalmology cases, from initial consultations to follow-up care, under expert mentorship.
- Board Exam Preparation: Engage in activities such as journal clubs, image reviews, and clinical discussions designed to strengthen your knowledge base and prepare you for the rigors of board certification.
- Refine Research Skills: Participate in a research project under the guidance of experienced mentors, culminating in a presentation of findings at a professional conference. This experience is highly valued in residency applications.
- Enhance Teaching Experience: Assist in training veterinary students, interns, and other team members, honing your ability to communicate complex concepts effectively—a critical skill for future residency training.
