WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE INITIAL CONSULTATION

Once you arrive at our clinic, a front staff team member will check you in and register your paperwork into the computer system. Once in the exam room, one of our nursing staff will review your pet’s medical history and current concerns with you. The doctor will then enter the exam room and complete a comprehensive eye examination that includes one or all of the three basic ocular diagnostic tests, evaluation of the eyelids and tissues of the ocular surface, carefully examining the front structures of the eye with a biomicroscope and retinal evaluation using an indirect ophthalmoscope.

The three basic diagnostic tests typically performed during the initial examination are the following:

• 1) Schirmer tear test to measure tear production (dry eye test)
• 2) Fluorescein stain (yellow dye test) to check for corneal ulceration and tear film abnormalities
• 3) Tonometry (eye pressure test) to evaluate for glaucoma

Although some of these may have been done in the past, most likely they will need to be repeated as the condition of the eye can change rapidly.

After the initial examination is complete, the doctor will discuss the ocular findings, diagnosis and recommendations. If additional tests are recommended, those costs can be discussed at that time. If surgery is recommended, in most cases, an estimate can be presented during the examination or emailed shortly thereafter. You can expect to leave with a written summary of the visit stating the diagnosis, recommendations and medication instructions. Payment of fees are due at the time services are rendered.
