(VEC) offers a 3-year Veterinary Ophthalmology Residency Program with a 5-year commitment post-residency, designed to provide you with comprehensive training in a leading specialty clinic.

About Our Residency Program:
Our Veterinary Ophthalmology Residency Program is designed to prepare residents for the successful completion of the ABVO credentialing and board certification process, ultimately leading to Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. Throughout the residency, residents will receive extensive training in the surgical and medical management of ophthalmic diseases in small and large domestic animals, as well as exotics, avian, and zoo animals.
The resident will be responsible for providing outstanding patient care and will play an active role in the instruction of veterinary medical students, interns, and other residents.
Additional components of the program include:
- Journal Club: Meets 2x per week for in-depth discussions on the latest veterinary ophthalmology research and literature.
- Histopathology: Biweekly sessions for comprehensive training.
- Image Review: Regular sessions and quizzes to help prepare for boards.
- On-Call Duties: Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Research Project: Conduct a research project with presentation of findings at the ACVO Conference.
- Basic Sciences Course: Participation in fundamental science training related to ophthalmology.
- Resident Phacoemulsification Course: Specialized training in cataract surgery techniques.
- Rotations with Human Ophthalmologists: Comparative education opportunities to broaden your scope.
- Monthly Surgical Skills Sessions: Hands-on practice to enhance surgical proficiency.

- Curriculum Vitae.
- A personal statement describing your background, qualifications, reasons for applying for the residency, and career goals.
- Three to five letters of recommendation. These letters should address your knowledge of veterinary medicine, general clinical skills, ability to apply knowledge in clinical situations, communication skills, and ability to work with others.
- Class rank and GPA from veterinary school, which can be included in your CV.
What We Are Looking for in a Candidate:
- Be a graduate of a veterinary college and have a current license to practice in the state of California.
- Be a U.S. citizen, legal resident, or have an H1-B visa.
- Completed a one-year rotating internship or a one-year ophthalmology specialty internship.
- A commitment to providing exceptional veterinary ophthalmology care.
- A strong desire to grow within our team for the long-term.
